Foundation Course

The Yoga Scotland Foundation Course is offered to students who wish to develop their knowledge of yoga further; it is also a prerequisite for those wanting to train as teachers prior to taking the teaching diploma course.

The Yoga Scotland Foundation Course is an opportunity for students to develop their knowledge and understanding of yoga. It is also a prerequisite for those wishing to train as teachers, prior to taking the Teacher Training diploma course.

This comprehensive 60-hour course is designed to enable you to explore yoga in more depth than in a typical class as well as expand and consolidate your personal practice. You will be invited to experience the many aspects of yoga – asana, pranayama, concentration (dharana) and meditation (dhyana) – alongside topics such as the history and philosophy of yoga and its different paths and schools.

A Yoga Scotland Foundation Course Certificate is awarded to students who attend a minimum of 80% of the course but please note that the Foundation Course is not a teacher training course and does not provide those who complete the course with a teaching qualification.

The next Foundation Courses will be running in Edinburgh and Glasgow starting in Sept 2024. Applications for these courses will open soon. If you would like to ask any questions, please email admin@yogascotland.org.uk

We welcome applications to our Bursary scheme, please see information here

“I look forward to every Saturday of the Foundation Course.  From the start it has given me the time and space to transform my day-to-day practice. It offers much more than just asana practice; we delve into yoga theory, anatomy and philosophy.  I am only halfway through and yet this opportunity has already proved invaluable.”

“I am loving the Foundation Course. Each month I’m excited to be there and I learn so much from the tutors (and my fellow attendees!) every time. My own practice, self-awareness and understanding of yoga have advanced significantly and I’m only halfway through. It makes my whole life better.”

“Would thoroughly recommend this course for anyone wishing to increase their knowledge of yoga whether they decide to do the Teacher training or not! I have loved it!”

“I’m very glad I signed up for the Foundation Course. It explains, gels and clarifies what you think you already know and shows you that you are learning indefinitely.”

    Melanie Cook

Melanie has been practicing yoga and meditation since the early 1990’s, in order to manage a serious back condition and anxiety.

She has been teaching since 1995, having been introduced to the work the The Yoga For Health Foundation (YfHF) based in Bedfordshire.  After completing Teacher Training with the YfHF in 1995, she then became a teacher at their residential centre.  During her time there she continued her studies for the Remedial Teacher Training Course which she completed in 1996.

Melanie moved to Edinburgh and completed the Yoga Scotland Teacher Training Diploma in 1999.  She has completed numerous other trainings in pregnancy, yoga for children, pranayama and GP referral.  Melanie has run a number of BWY Foundation Courses and set up and run a Remedial Yoga Teacher Training course with her husband.  She is a guest tutor in Yoga and Disability Awareness for the Scottish School of Yoga Therapy.

She continues to be inspired by her students, many of whom are living with life changing conditions.

    Andrea Duffin

Andrea owns and runs The Yoga Mill Centre in Galashiels and teaches Yoga to all ages.

She first encountered meditation and relaxation techniques when she was 19, and later on after she had her 3rd child her interest in meditation led her to yoga, as a movement to help her aching body. And it did. First the asana practice helped to heal her physical aches and pains after a difficult pregnancy, then she realised how much more there was and fell in love with the deeper teachings of the practice.

Andrea has been teaching yoga and meditation to adults and children for over 10 years and in 2016 completed her 3 years training with Yoga Scotland. The 3 years with Yoga Scotland was a wonderfully intense, in-depth training of 1 year of Foundation Course followed by two years of Teacher Training to gain her 500 hours qualification. She has also completed the 1 year Living Yoga Course with Yoga Scotland.

On the Teacher Training Course we not only learned how to practice, but how to teach this practice. In philosophy we studied the ancient texts to support our personal practice and our teaching. Anatomy lectures helped us gain an insight into why we move in certain ways and how the practice of yoga physically helps our health, physically and mentally.

Of course we are ever the student and Andrea continues to learn through workshops, personal practice and learning something new from each of her students every time she leads a class.

Andrea’s classes are suitable for everyone; beginners and those wishing to deepen their practice. She teaches a hatha class that embodies the whole of yoga: meditation, pranayama (breathwork), asana (postures), philosophy and usually a lovely long relaxation to end.

Andrea sees yoga as something deeply personal to everyone as we explore our inner landscape through our practice. She loves teaching everyone to work intuitively, working from within and meeting ourselves where we are. Finding the essence of our true nature through exploration of the body, mind and spirit.

Unfortunately due to a change in circumstances, the Sept 2023 is not running this year.

    Rona Main

Rona has been practicing Yoga for 18 years and teaching for 10 years.  Yoga and family have become her vocation.

Rona trained as a Yoga Teacher during time spent in London, qualifying in 2007 with the British Wheel of Yoga Teaching Diploma.  Teaching in the Inverurie area of Aberdeenshire, she agrees that Yoga should be accessible to all ages, abilities and backgrounds. Gratitude, openness and collaboration are at the heart of her practice.

Hatha led, her style draws on a mix of traditional and modern teaching influences in asana, pranayama and relaxation.  She works closely with the breath in all aspects of asana practice, often with sequences, encouraging Students to build strength and flexibility at their own pace.

Identifying what can disturb inner peace, and helping Students find Santosha through Yoga, is a recurring theme she builds upon.  Although work-in-progress, this includes Rona’s own personal exploration into a more minimal and uncluttered lifestyle.

Rona also teaches children and youngsters in schools, and has recently incorporated more restorative Yoga and meditation into her adult classes.

Rona is a co-tutor for the Yoga Scotland Aberdeen Foundation Course and believes this is a very rewarding step for Students seeking a deeper appreciation of Yoga and an enhanced practice.
