Event Details

Aims: To help participants understand ageing and how to design Yoga sessions that enhance well-being and offer therapeutic benefits.

Objectives:

  • Understand ageing and how it impacts people on different levels, using the Koshas
  • Understand and explore the positive effects Yoga has on aspects of ageing
  • Become aware of common conditions and disabilities of ageing and the risks they can pose in a Yoga session
  • Practice using adaptations to ensure people are comfortable, safe and supported
  • Create a short Yoga session that is empowering and inclusive, using props, chairs etc.

Tutor Bio - Sue Northrop

Sue is a qualified Yoga Teacher and Yoga Therapist. She practised Yoga for many years, but as a career, she came to teach later in life as her interest deepened, and she could see the many benefits. She trained in Inclusive Yoga in 2015 and the Scottish School of Yoga Therapy in 2018. Other training includes Gentle Years Yoga, YIHA and a master’s in dementia studies.

She works closely with Yoga Scotland Tutor, Melanie Cook to run Yoga Moments – training in Yoga and dementia. She teaches inclusive yoga on Zoom and in person and works with care homes, day centres and the Musselburgh Meeting Centre.

Sue also runs Dementia Friendly East Lothian (DFEL), a social enterprise that promotes better lives for people with dementia.

All payments for Sue’s yoga work go to DFEL, which provides free yoga and training for people living with dementia, unpaid carers, and community-run organisations. Thank you for supporting Sue’s great work!
